Leonard's Subway
Leonard's Subway was a streetcar in the Texas city of Fort Worth . The name subway stems from the fact that 500 meters of this 1,600 meter long track lay in a tunnel. Another reason was that the mall could advertise owning the US's first privately owned subway.
The track opened on February 12, 1963 between Leonard's Department Store and the customer car park. It had five stops, including the subway station located under the shopping center. Of these, only the two terminal stops were approached in both directions. The train only stopped at the stop in front of the tunnel on its way towards the shopping center and at the other two on the way back.
Between 1962 and 1966 Leonard's procured a total of 15 PCC cars from DC Transit in Washington, DC These were manufactured by the St. Louis Car Company in the 1930s and 1940s . In order to cope with the number of passengers, the seats in the vehicles were removed for a short time. After the shopping center changed hands in 1974 , the railway operated under the name Tandy Center Subway . With the beginning of the construction of an administration building for the electronics company RadioShack in the parking lot on August 30th, 2002 the end of the railway came.
Use of the train was free for customers of the shopping center.
