Henri Schwery
Henri Cardinal Schwery (born June 14, 1932 in Saint-Léonard VS , Switzerland ; † January 7, 2021 there ) was a Swiss clergyman and Roman Catholic bishop of Sion . He was chairman of the Swiss Bishops' Conference and Grand Prior of the Order of Knights of the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem in Switzerland.
Life
Henri Schwery, the youngest of eleven siblings, studied philosophy and Catholic theology at the seminary in Sion and as an alumnus of the Roman French seminary at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome and in Switzerland. On July 7, 1957, he received the sacrament of ordination . After his ordination, he completed a degree in mathematics and physics at the Swiss University of Friborg . He was first a student chaplain for the students of Catholic Action(1958–1966) and military chaplain (1958–1977) as well as cathedral chaplain at the Cathedral of Our Lady in Sion. From 1961 to 1977 he was a teacher at the cantonal secondary school in Sion, which he also headed as rector from 1972 to 1977 .
Pope Paul VI appointed Henri Schwery on July 22, 1977 Bishop of Sion. The episcopal ordination donated him on September 17 of the same year his predecessor in office, François-Nestor Adam ; Co- consecrators were the bishop of Lausanne, Geneva and Friborg , Pierre Mamie , and the bishop of St. Gallen , Otmar Mäder . His episcopal motto was "Spiritus Domini Gaudium et spes " (God's spirit is joy and hope), as an expression of his decision to be guided by the Holy Spirit and the spirit of the Second Vatican Council .
From the beginning he was confronted with the problem of the traditionalists around Marcel Lefebvre . Its seminary and center in Ecône is only 15 kilometers from Sion. Schwery also tried to mediate in the conflict between the diocese of Chur and its bishop Wolfgang Haas . He did not consider the transfer of Haas to the newly created Archdiocese of Vaduz to be a satisfactory solution.
From 1983 to 1988 he was chairman of the Swiss Bishops' Conference . The organization of the apostolic trip of Pope John Paul II to Switzerland in 1984 also fell during his term of office . On April 1, 1995, he had to resign from leadership of the diocese of Sion for health reasons.
Pope John Paul II accepted him in the consistory on June 28, 1991 as a cardinal priest with the titular church Santi Protomartiri a Via Aurelia Antica in the college of cardinals . Schwery was a participant in the 2005 conclave , from which Benedict XVI. emerged as Pope. At the conclave in 2013 Cardinal Schwery did not participate because he had exceeded the age limit of 80 years.
Henri Schwery was a member of the Congregation for the Causes of Saints and of the Pontifical Council for Social Communications until he reached the age limit of 75 . He was a member of the Congregation for Catholic Education from 1978 to 1983 and participated in numerous events on vocations and evangelization in Europe. In 1985 he was a participant in the Extraordinary Synod of Bishops in 1985. He was an Honorary Canon of the Territorial Abbey of Saint-Maurice .
In 1995 he was appointed by Cardinal Grand Master Giuseppe Cardinal Caprio as Grand Crusader of the Order of the Knights of the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem and invested by Eugenio Corecco , Bishop of Lugano and Grand Prior of the Swiss Lieutenancy . From 1996 to 2007 he was major prior of the Swiss Lieutenancy of the Papal Order of Knights. In 2015 he was awarded the Palm of Jerusalem in gold by Cardinal Grand Master Edwin Frederick O'Brien for his commitment in the Holy Land . In 2018, at the suggestion of Jean-Pierre de Glutz , Governor of the Swiss Lieutenancy, Cardinal Grand Master Edwin Frederick O'Brien awarded him the title of Grand Prior of Honor.
He was the author of many pastoral letters and biblical-theological reflections on the relationship between the clergy and the human and religious reality of his church. In 1978 he dedicated his first letter to the lay and priestly professions. Pope Francis praised Schwery for his constant promotion of priestly vocations and his concern for the formation of the clergy.
