Pierre-François de Preux

Pierre-François de Preux , also Pierre-Joseph de Preux , (born April 28, 1795 in Anchettes near Venthône , Canton Valais ; † July 15, 1875 in Sion , Canton Valais) was Bishop of Sion .

Life

Pierre-François de Preux was the son of the marriage of Johann Joseph Augustin, a feudal lord, standard bearer and mayor of Sierre , and his wife Maria Josepha Magdalena Rubin. He was a student of the Jesuit colleges in Saint-Maurice-de-Laques above Sierre and Brig and Sitten. He studied theology at the large seminary in Sion. From 1818 he studied at the Collegium Germanicum , at that time located in Ferrara , Emilia-Romagna , and in Rome . In 1822 he received his doctorate theologiae and doctor of law and was ordained a priest in Rome .

In 1822 he became professor of dogmatics and exegesis at the large seminar in Sion, and from 1827 rector of the seminar. He became a canon of the Cathedral of Our Lady in 1822 and a member of the cathedral chapter in 1834.

In 1843, Pierre-François de Preux was elected Bishop of Sion and Pope Gregory XVI. approved. From 1863 to 1875 he was a member of the Swiss Bishops' Conference , of which he was one of the initiators. From 1871 until his death in 1875 he chaired the Swiss Bishops' Conference.

He took part in the First Vatican Council (1869-1870) and was known as a defender of papal infallibility . Pope Gregory XVI appointed him in 1854 as papal assistant to the throne . In 1862 he was made an honorary citizen of Rome.
