Jules-Maurice Abbet (born September 12, 1845 in Bex ; † July 11, 1918 in Sion ) was Bishop of Sion .

Life

Jules-Maurice-Albert Abbet was the son of Joseph-Marie Abbet and Emérentienne Mermoud. He was born in the canton of Vaud , because his father had to flee to Bex after the conservative takeover of power in 1844. After attending the colleges of Sitten and Brig , he went to Innsbruck , where he received his doctorate in theology and canon law . He was ordained priest in Feldkirch in 1870 . Jules-Maurice Abbet returned to Valais and in 1871 took over professorship at the college of Sion, at the seminary and at the Valais law school until he became parish priest and canon of Sion in 1880 .

In 1895, the Grand Council elected him from a proposal of four by the cathedral chapter as auxiliary bishop of Adrien Jardinier with the right of succession. It was the last episcopal election in Valais carried out in this form by the cantonal parliament. Pope Leo XIII. confirmed the election and at the same time appointed him titular bishop of Troas . The episcopal ordination took place in 1896 by Joseph Paccolat , Abbot of Saint-Maurice .

During his time as assistant bishop the office of vicar general remained vacant. He took over the personal leadership of the diocese and the title of bishop in 1901 after the death of his predecessor. His close relative Joseph-Émile Abbet , abbot of Saint-Maurice, received episcopal ordination through him in 1909. From 1912 until his death in 1918 he led the Swiss Bishops' Conference . He died of the consequences of the Spanish flu .
