Ried-Brig (officially called Ried bei Brig until 1994 ) is a political municipality and a civic community with a civic council of the Brig district and a parish of the Brig deanship in the Swiss canton of Valais .
history
The name Ried is most likely derived from the Alemannic reuten or roden . At the end of the 15th century, Ried-Brig obtained village rights.
The village of Ried-Brig has changed from a farming village to a residential community over the past 40 years.
In earlier times, a lot of slate was mined above and below ground for house roofs.
geography
In addition to the various hamlets in the Brigerberg , which make up the village of Ried-Brig, the municipality comprises a total of 43 Maiensaß and Alps. The historically known Ganter Valley with the famous Ganter Bridge also belongs to the municipality .
In the south, the ridge from the Hillhorn via Bortelhorn, "Furgguböimhoru" and Wasenhorn to the Monte Leone ridge forms the border with Italy . Along the Monte Leone ridge Ried-Brig borders the municipality Zwischbergen -Gondo.
In the west, the Taferbach forms the border to the neighboring municipality of Simplon Dorf as far as the Marchgrabu above Mittubäch and further along the Taferbach, the Saltina and the “Oberi Brigeri” water pipeline, the border to the municipality of Brig-Glis . In the north the municipality borders on Termen and Grengiols .
The municipality covers an area of 4753 hectares. The north side of the Simplonpassstrasse lies almost exclusively in the municipality of Ried-Brig.
