Location of the municipality | |
Termen ( Walliserdeutsch : Tärmu ) is a political municipality and a civic municipality with a civic council in the Brig district in the German-speaking part of the canton of Valais in Switzerland . The ski area and the village of Rosswald also belong to the municipality of Termen.
history
In the 13th century, Termen broke away from the original community of Naters . The origin of the community name "Termen" is not completely clear. Since there are also mineral springs in the municipality, a Roman origin of the name is possible (from thermal baths ). Also conceivable and probably more probable due to Roman influence is the derivation of the Latin terminus ("end"), due to the geographical location.
As early as 1500 there was a chapel where the village square is today. Between 1911 and 1913, under the direction of the architect Kalbermatten from Sion, today's parish church was built, of which St. Joseph is the patron . It was consecrated in November 1913 by Bishop Julius Mauritius Abbet. The nave is supported by granite columns from the Simplon region and is built in a neo-Romanesque style . In addition to the parish church, there are five other chapels in the municipality.
In earlier times, large amounts of slate were mined above and below ground for house roofs. Today the company Pearlwater - a production company of coop - wins the calcium-containing mineral water SWISS ALPINA , which leaks on Termer Boden.
