Birgisch is a place in the municipality of Naters in the Brig district in the German-speaking part of the canton of Valais in Switzerland .

Until the merger with the municipality of Mund to form the municipality of Naters on January 1, 2013, Birgisch was an independent political municipality .

history

Birgisch was first mentioned in 1232 as Burginse (a Chono de Burginse ). The hillside settlement above the right bank of the Rhone includes numerous hamlets. On the so-called Kocherbiel by the chapel there are remains of a medieval castle. Birgisch shared the political fortunes of Zenden Brig. Birgisch belongs to Naters in church to this day . A chapel (patronage of John the Baptist), owned by the Johanniter in 1379 and connected to a hermitage , was rebuilt in 1687 and rebuilt in 1905 ( crucifix from the 14th century, baroque altar, various relics from the 18th century). Up until the beginning of the 19th century, there were two communities, Upper and Lower Mountain (mentioned as a community in 1320) with common commons and the Alps. The parish hall dates from approx. 1550 (renewals 1592, 1920-21). The brotherhood of St. John, mentioned in 1548, was incorporated into the school fund around 1850. Opened from 1953–73 by a cable car , Birgisch has been connected to the valley by a road since 1970 and to Mund since 1977 . In 1990, three quarters of those in employment worked outside Birgisch.
