Klyuchevsky ( Russian Ключе́вский ) is an urban-type settlement in the Transbaikalia region in Russia with 1,356 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010).

The place is a good 430 km as the crow flies east-northeast of the regional capital Chita at the western end of the Amasar Mountains , southwest of the 1300  m high Sobatschkin ridge (Sobachkin chrebet). It is located on the Klyuchi river, which flows over the Scheltuga to the Schilka, which runs 25 km to the southeast .

Klyuchevsky belongs to the Mogotschinsky Rajon and is located a good 30 km southwest of its administrative center Mogotscha . It is the seat and only locality of the municipality Klyuchevskoje gorodskoje posselenije.

history

The settlement was established around 1901 in connection with the beginning of the mining of the Klyuchi gold deposit . Production, which was discontinued in 1910, was resumed and expanded in 1936. Since 1950 Klyuchevsky, whose name is derived from those of the river and the deposit, has had the status of an urban-type settlement.

From the 1960s , gold was extracted from soaps in the valleys of the Scheltuga and its tributaries Dawenda and Kudetscha in the area southwest of Klyuchevsky with the help of two gold dredgers . In the 1990s, the entire mining operation was temporarily suspended, which contributed to the sharp decline in population during this time.

Klyuchevsky is bypassed a few kilometers east and south of the trunk road R297 Amur (until 2017 also M58), which connects Chita with Khabarovsk and is part of the transcontinental road link. A local road runs to the north-west to the neighboring settlement of Dawenda, 9 km away, and further over the Sobatschkinkamm to the Kisly Klyutsch station on the Trans-Siberian Railway, 30 km away .
