Baljaga ( Russian Баляга́ ) is an urban-type settlement in the Transbaikalia region in Russia with 3322 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010).
geography
The place is about 330 km as the crow flies west-southwest of the regional capital Chita on both sides of the eponymous river Baljaga , about 10 km above its confluence with the Chilok .
Baljaga belongs to the Petrowsk-Sabaikalski Raion and is located 15 km south-southeast of its administrative center Petrowsk-Sabaikalski . The settlement is the seat of the municipality of Baljaginskoje gorodskoje posselenije, which also includes the village of Kuli (8 km east).
history
The place was founded in 1899 in connection with the construction of the Trans-Siberian Railway . Since 1958 Baljaga has had the status of an urban-type settlement.

Baljaga is on the Trans-Siberian Railway (route kilometers 5804 from Moscow ), which was electrified on this section in 1974 . To the north the settlement is bypassed by the trunk road R258 Baikal (formerly M55), which connects Irkutsk to Chita via Ulan-Ude and is part of the transcontinental road link. At Baljaga, the 234 km long regional road 76K-018 (formerly R425) branches off from this in a south-westerly direction via Krasny Tschikoi to Jamarowka am Tschikoi .
