Sabaikalsk ( Russian Забайкальск ) is an urban-type settlement in the Transbaikalia region ( Russia ) with 11,769 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010).

geography

The settlement is located in the dry steppe landscape of southern Dauria , a good 400 kilometers southeast of the regional capital Chita , directly on the border with the People's Republic of China . Across the border lies the city ​​of Manjur about ten kilometers southeast .

The Sabaikalsk settlement has been the administrative center of the Sabaikalsk Rajon of the same name since 1967 .

history

The history of the place began with the construction of the Chinese Eastern Railway , part of the original route of the Trans-Siberian Railway from 1897, when the passing point No. 86 ( Rasjesd No. 86 ) was built here as the last station on the territory of the Russian Empire , around one small settlement emerged. Operations on this section began on October 25, 1901; 1904 is the founding year of the place (according to other information already 1900).

During the Soviet-Chinese border war , the place and the station were given the name Otpor , Russian for defense, resistance . In 1954 the status of urban-type settlement was given. It received its current name in 1960, derived from the Russian Sabaikalje for Transbaikalia .

Economy and Infrastructure

Sabaikalsk is the border station on the former Chinese Eastern Railway, today's Karymskaya –Sabaikalsk line of the Transbaikal Railway (Regional Administration of Russian Railways ). It is located at route kilometer 6658 from Moscow , immediately before the border with China and about ten kilometers from the first Chinese station Manjur (formerly Manzhouli; Russian, and officially Маньчжурия / Mantschurija , for Manchuria, when the route opened up into the 1930s ).

The A350 highway from Tschita, part of the AH6 Asian highway, also crosses the border here. The road border crossing was rebuilt in 1998, greatly expanded and is now one of the largest in Russia.

Border traffic and related trade are the main economic drivers. Around 60 percent of the goods transported by land between Russia and the People's Republic of China cross the border near Sabaikalsk. There are also companies in the food industry.
