George P. McLean

George Payne McLean (born October 7, 1857 in Simsbury , Hartford County , Connecticut , † June 6, 1932 ibid) was an American politician , governor and US senator of the state of Connecticut. He was a member of the Republican Party .

Early years and political advancement

George McLean graduated from Hartford High School in 1877, went on to study law and then got his bar license. McLean then opened his own law firm in Hartford . He decided to pursue a political career as well. He ran for a seat in the Connecticut House of Representatives in 1883 , where he remained until 1885 after a successful election. He was also active between 1884 and 1901 as a clerk in the State Board of Pardons . He also served in the Connecticut Senate from 1889 to 1891, and succeeded George G. Sill as the Connecticut District Attorney from 1892 to 1896 .

Connecticut Governor

McLean won the Republican gubernatorial nomination in 1900 and was elected governor of Connecticut a short time later. During his tenure, the governor's administrative staff and Connecticut militia were restructured. A tax authority was also established. McLean decided not to run for re-election due to poor health and left office on January 7, 1903.

Further career

After his recovery, McLean was elected to the US Senate in 1911 , where he remained until 1929.

George P. McLean died on June 6, 1932 and was buried in Simsbury. He was married twice, once to Leah Demarest and then to Isabella McClintock. Four children emerged from the connections.
