Hobart B. Bigelow

Hobart Baldwin Bigelow (born May 16, 1834 in North Haven , Connecticut , † October 12, 1891 in New Haven , Connecticut) was an American politician and governor of the US state of Connecticut. He was a member of the Republican Party .

Early years and political advancement

Hobart Bigelow attended South Egremont Academy in Massachusetts , but left school early to begin training as a mechanic. He became a successful businessman and a leading manufacturer of heaters and heavy equipment. In 1861 he bought the Bigelow Manufacturing Company , which later ran its business under the name HB Bigelow & Co. Bigelow was the Society's President all his life. He began his political career as a New Haven councilor, an office he held between 1863 and 1876. He was also a member of the Connecticut House of Representatives in 1875 and Mayor of New Haven from 1879 to 1881.

Connecticut Governor

He was elected Governor of Connecticut on November 2, 1880 and sworn in on January 5, 1881. During his tenure, the Storrs Agricultural School was founded and the taxation on life insurance policies of insurance companies was cut back somewhat. The law prohibited misleading voting registration procedures; Furthermore, larger companies were obliged to install fire escapes. Bigelow left office on January 3, 1883 and retired from public service.

Hobart B. Bigelow died on October 12, 1891 and was buried in Evergreen Cemetery in New Haven. He was married to Eleanor Lewis. The couple had four children together.
