John G. Rowland (2011)

John Grosvenor Rowland (born May 24, 1957 in Waterbury , Connecticut ) is an American politician ( Republican Party ). He was governor of the state of Connecticut three times . He resigned from his post in 2004 on charges of corruption . In 2005 Rowland was sentenced to one year in prison.

Early years and political advancement

Rowland attended Holy Cross High School in Waterbury until 1975 . In 1979 he graduated from Villanova University in Pennsylvania as a Bachelor of Arts . Rowland initially worked as an insurance agent.

Rowland's political career began in 1981. He was initially a member of the Connecticut House of Representatives for two terms from 1981 to 1985 and then for three terms in the US House of Representatives , from 1985 to 1991.

Connecticut Governor

Rowland won the Connecticut governor election in November 1994, making it Connecticut's youngest ever governor. He was re-elected for a second term in 1998 and a third term in 2002. His policies were characterized by tax cuts and social cuts .

Criminal proceedings

In 2003, the Connecticut House of Representatives and law enforcement agencies opened an investigation into allegations of corruption against Rowland. Rowland resigned in June 2004 and was sentenced to one year imprisonment and a three year suspended sentence in March 2005 for fraud and tax evasion . In February 2006, he was released early from custody .

Others

Rowland joined the Waterbury City Council in early 2008 as the Economic Development Officer.

Rowland and his wife Patricia have five children together.
