Elizur Goodrich

Elizur Goodrich (born March 24, 1761 in Durham , Middlesex County , Colony of Connecticut , † November 1, 1849 in New Haven , Connecticut ) was an American lawyer and politician .

Born in Durham to Elizur Goodrich, he studied law at Yale University until 1779 and was admitted to the bar in 1783. After working as a lawyer in New Haven for a while, he was a member of the Connecticut House of Representatives from 1795 to 1802 and at times speaker of this chamber.

In the presidential election in 1796 , Goodrich was elector of the Federalist Party . He was elected to the United States House of Representatives for Connecticut , where he only served from 1799 to 1801. Then he was appointed Customs Inspector of the Port of New Haven by John Adams .

Goodrich also taught at Yale University, served in the probate court from 1802 to 1818 and mayor of New Haven from 1803 to 1822. He died in 1849 and was buried in Grove Street Cemetery in New Haven. His older brother Chauncey was also a congressman and US Senator for Connecticut.
