Robert Nicholas Giaimo (born October 15, 1919 in New Haven , Connecticut , †  May 24, 2006 in Arlington , Virginia ) was an American politician . Between 1959 and 1981 he represented the third constituency of the state of Connecticut in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Robert Giaimo attended North Haven public schools . He then studied at Fordham College in New York City until 1941 and then at the University of Connecticut until 1943 . Between 1943 and 1946 he served in the US Army during World War II . After studying law and being admitted to the bar in 1947, he began working in his new profession in New Haven. Between 1949 and 1955, Giaimo served on the North Haven City School Board. From 1952 to 1954 he was an administrative clerk at the probate court there. He then served between 1955 and 1958 as Chairman of the Connecticut State Personnel Appeal Board . In North Haven he was also a member of the ward council.

Giaimo was a member of the Democratic Party . In 1956 he ran for a seat in the US House of Representatives unsuccessfully for the first time. He was then elected to the House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the third district of Connecticut in the 1958 congressional election. There he took over on January 3, 1959, succeeding Republican Albert W. Cretella , whom he had defeated in the election. After ten re-elections, he was able to complete eleven legislative terms in Congress by January 3, 1981 . From 1977 to 1981 he was chairman of the budget committee. His time in Congress included the Vietnam War , the civil rights movement and the Watergate affair . In 1980 he renounced another candidacy.

After the end of his time in the US House of Representatives, Robert Giaimo withdrew from politics. He died in Arlington in May 2006 and was buried in North Haven.
