Jonathan Brace

Jonathan Brace (born November 12, 1754 in Harwinton , Litchfield County , Colony of Connecticut , †  August 26, 1837 in Hartford , Connecticut ) was an American politician . Between 1798 and 1800 he represented the state of Connecticut in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Jonathan Brace grew up during the British colonial era and attended elementary schools in his homeland. He then studied until 1779 at Harvard College , later Harvard University . After studying law and qualifying as a lawyer, he started in Pawlet ( Vermont to work in his new job). In 1782 he moved his residence and legal practice to Manchester , Vermont. There he was also a member of a body for the revision of the Vermont state constitution. Between 1784 and 1785, Brace served as the district attorney in Bennington County .

In January 1786, Brace moved to Glastonbury , Connecticut. In his new home state, however, he was only admitted to the bar in 1790. In the meantime, Brace began a political career. He was a member of the Connecticut House of Representatives in 1788 and 1791 to 1794 . In 1794 he moved to Hartford, where he served as a town judge from 1797 to 1798 and from 1800 to 1815. After the death of Congressman Joshua Coit on September 5, 1798, Jonathan Brace was elected as a candidate for the Federalist Party in a by-election to succeed him in the US House of Representatives. In the regular congressional elections he was confirmed in this mandate, which he took on December 3, 1798. Brace only stayed in Congress until 1800 . Then he resigned from his mandate.

In addition to the aforementioned Hartford judge, he was a member of the Connecticut State Council between 1802 and 1818. Between 1807 and 1809 he also served as the district attorney in Hartford County . After 1809 he was also a judge in that county. He held this office until 1821. At the same time he was a debt restructuring judge in the same district between 1809 and 1824. Between 1815 and 1824 he was also Mayor of Hartford and in 1819 and 1820 a member of the State Senate . After 1824, Jonathan Brace did not hold any other public offices. He died in Hartford on August 26, 1837.
