history
Glastonbury grew out of a settlement founded by around 30 families on the east bank of the Connecticut River in 1636 , when they bought the land from the then landowner in exchange for around 11 m of cloth. In 1690 the residents were given permission to become an independent town. During the American Revolution, George Stocking founded a black powder factory . Shipbuilding was developed in the 18th and early 19th centuries. These sailed the Connecticut River.
In 1840 the drugstore James B. Williams made the first attempts at soap production in his drugstore in Manchester . When he found a satisfactory formula that would also be suitable for shaving, he moved to Glastonbury and started the first soap factory. A few years later they also produced ink and shoe polish. Thus the industrial age entered the city.
