Manchester is a city in Hartford County in the US state Connecticut with 56,100 inhabitants (as of 2004). The 71.7 km² urban area has a water surface of 1.1 km².
history
The first European settlers settled in the area in 1672. This operated agriculture and initially called the area Orford Parish . The many rivers provided water for power generation and the city became industrialized. Paper, iron goods and textiles were produced in it. The area that today is Manchester belonged to the city of Hartford . This later became the urban areas of Manchester, East Hartford and West Hartford. In 1783 East Hartford became an independent city that Manchester co-administered until 1823.
The Pitkin Glassworks were Connecticut's first glassmakers between 1783 and 1830. The Pitkin Glassworks ruin is now a national memorial.
The Cheney family began producing silk in 1838. The Cheney Brothers Historic District is a National Historic Landmark .

The city is about 8 km east of Hartford, Connecticut . Because Interstate 84 passes north of the city, Manchester is connected to Hartford with Interstate 384 , which is only 13.73 km long .

Landmarks and historical buildings
