Vermont Attorney General
The Vermont Attorney General is one of five cabinet-level constitutional offices in the state of Vermont . He is elected for two years. The office was formed by a constitutional act of the Vermont General Assembly in 1790, repealed in 1797, and revived in 1904. It began as a one-man office in Windsor , the state's first capital. When the function was revived in 1904, the office was housed in the Vermont State House . Today the office is located in the pavilion and is the largest employer for lawyers in the state. The Vermont Attorney General since 1997 is William Sorrell .
The office provides legal advice to all state agencies and the Vermont General Assembly, the state legislature. It deals with civil and criminal cases in all courts of the state, both for the first and for the second instance. It defends the state when it is sued in matters of criminal law, environmental protection, consumer protection and civil rights, as well as in other proceedings.
