Jeffrey Amestoy

Jeffrey Amestoy (born July 24, 1946 in Rutland , Vermont ) is an American lawyer and politician who was Vermont Attorney General from 1985 to 1997 .

Life

Amestoy was born in Rutland, Vermont. He received his bachelor's degree from Hobart College in Geneva , New York . He received his PhD from Hastings Law School , the University of California at San Francisco and a Masters of Public Administration from the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University . He served in the United States Army Reserve from 1968 to 1974.

He is a member of the Republican Party of Vermont and served seven terms as Vermont Attorney General from 1984 to 1997. Governor Howard Dean appointed Amestoy as Chief Justice of the Vermont Supreme Court on January 10, 1997 . He succeeded Frederic W. Allen . During his time as Chief Justice, he wrote the Supreme Court ruling on the Baker v. Vermont , 744 A.2d 864 (Vt. 1999), which ruled that the state's denial of equal rights for same-sex marriage violates the Vermont Constitution . The court ordered the Vermont General Assembly to either find a solution to enable same-sex marriages or other alternative legal mechanisms to introduce similar rights for same-sex couples.

Amestoy retired on June 16, 2004, and was succeeded by Paul L. Reiber as Chief Justice .
