William Sorrell

William H. Sorrell called Bill Sorrell (born March 9, 1947 in Burlington , Vermont ) is an American lawyer and politician who has been Vermont Attorney General since 1998 in his eighth term .

Life

Sorrell was born in Burlington Vermont. He graduated from the University of Notre Dame with a bachelor's degree in 1970. Then the Cornell Law School in 1974. As a Deputy District Attorney for Chittenden County , he worked from 1975 to 1977. He was District Attorney from 1977 to 1978 and from 1989 to 1992. From 1978 to 1989 he worked for the private law firm McNeil, Murray & Sorrell . He was Vermont's Secretary of Administration from 1992 to 1997.

After Attorney General Jeffrey Amestoy was appointed Chief Justice of the Vermont Supreme Court in May 1997 , Governor Howard Dean appointed Sorrell Attorney General to bridge the remainder of the term until the new Attorney General was elected. The 1998, 2000, 2002, 2004, 2006, 2008, 2010, 2012 and 2014 elections were won by Sorrell.

He was President of the National Association of Attorneys General from 2004 to 2005. He was previously Chairman of the NAAG Tobacco Committee and Vice-Chairman of the Consumer Protection Committee. In June 2003 he was awarded the NAAG Kelley-Wyman Award by the other Attorneys General . This is awarded annually to the Outstanding Attorney General who has done the most for the National Attorney General's goals.

Since 2008 the American Legacy Foundation has given an annual talk on tobacco issues. Of the Vermont Medical Society , he received the award in 2009 Citizen of the Year and in 2010 was awarded by the National Humane Society of the Humane Law Enforcement . Bill Sorrell is Chairman of the NAAG Mission Foundation Board, served as Chairman of the Board of the American Legacy Foundation . He served on Vermont's Judicial Nominating Board , served as President of the United Cerebral Palsy of Vermont, and served as executive director of the Vermont Coalition of the Handicapped .

Bill Sorrell is married to Mary Alice McKenzie and the couple have two children.
