Lewis Sperry (born January 23, 1848 in East Windsor , Hartford County , Connecticut , † January 22, 1922 ibid) was an American politician . Between 1891 and 1895 he represented the first constituency of the state of Connecticut in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Lewis Sperry attended his home county school, Monson Academy in Massachusetts, and then through 1873 Amherst College in Amherst . After studying law and being admitted to the bar in 1875, he began to work in Hartford in his new profession.

Politically, Sperry was a member of the Democratic Party . In 1876 he was elected to the Connecticut House of Representatives. In the congressional election of 1890, Sperry was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the first district of Connecticut , where he succeeded Republican William E. Simonds on March 4, 1891 . After re-election in 1892, he was able to complete two consecutive terms in Congress until March 3, 1895 . In the elections of 1894 he was defeated by the Republican candidate E. Stevens Henry .

After serving in the US House of Representatives, Lewis served as the Acting Attorney General of Connecticut in 1899 . In 1902 he was a delegate at a meeting to revise the state constitution. From 1905 to 1917 he sat on his state's health committee and was a legal advisor to the motorway committee. He also worked as a lawyer in Hartford again. Sperry died on June 22, 1922 in his native East Windsor.
