Calvin Goddard

Calvin Goddard (born July 17, 1768 in Shrewsbury , Worcester County , Province of Massachusetts Bay , †  May 2, 1842 in Norwich , Connecticut ) was an American politician . Between 1801 and 1805 he represented the state of Connecticut in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Calvin Goddard first attended the Plainfield Academy and then studied until 1786 at Dartmouth College in Hanover ( New Hampshire ). After a subsequent law degree and his admission to the bar in 1790, he began to practice in Plainfield in his new profession.

Politically, Goddard was a member of the Federalist Party founded by Alexander Hamilton . Between 1795 and 1801 he was a member of the Connecticut House of Representatives . After the resignation of Congressman Elizur Goodrich in 1801, he was elected in the state-wide by-election as his successor to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC . In the following two regular congressional elections in 1802 and 1804, Goddard was confirmed. He took up his mandate on May 14, 1801 and exercised it until 1805, but resigned before the constituent session of the Congress elected in 1804.

In 1807 Goddard was re-elected to the Connecticut House of Representatives, of which he became president. In the same year he moved to Norwich, where he worked as a lawyer. Between 1808 and 1815, Goddard was a member of the Connecticut Governing Council. In 1812 he served as a federalist presidential elector. In 1814, Goddard was a delegate at a meeting in Hartford to discuss a possible withdrawal of the New England states from the Union. The background to this was the resistance of these states to the British-American War of 1812 . However, there was no majority in favor of leaving. Between 1815 and 1818 Goddard served as a judge on the Connecticut Superior Court . He also served as Mayor of Norwich from 1814 to 1834. Calvin Goddard died in this city on May 2, 1842.
