Uriel Holmes

Uriel Holmes (born August 26, 1764 in East Haddam , Colony of Connecticut , †  May 18, 1827 in Canton , Connecticut ) was an American politician . Between 1817 and 1818 he represented the state of Connecticut in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Uriel Holmes came to Hartland , Hartford County with his parents when he was young . There he attended public schools. He then studied at Yale College until 1784 . After studying law and being admitted to the bar in 1798, he began working in his new profession in Litchfield .

Holmes was a member of the Federalist Party . Between 1803 and 1805 he was a member of the Connecticut House of Representatives ; between 1807 and 1814 he was a district attorney in Litchfield County . In the same district he worked as a judge until 1817. In the Congressional elections of 1816, which were held nationwide in Connecticut, he was elected as his party's candidate for the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC . There he came on March 4, 1817 for the third mandate of his state to succeed Epaphroditus Champion .

Holmes resigned from this mandate as early as 1818. Thereafter, Sylvester Gilbert was elected his successor in Congress when the by-election was due . Uriel Holmes died in Canton on May 18, 1827 and was buried in Litchfield.
