Robert J. Vance

Robert Johnstone Vance (born March 15, 1854 in New York City , †  June 15, 1902 in Montreat , North Carolina ) was an American politician . Between 1887 and 1889 he represented the first constituency of the state of Connecticut in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Robert Vance attended public schools in his home country. In 1870 he moved to New Britain , Connecticut. There he graduated from high school. Between 1878 and 1887 he was City Clerk in his new hometown. From 1881 he was also the publisher and editor of the newspaper "New Britain Herald". Vance was a member of the Democratic Party . In 1886 he was elected to the Connecticut House of Representatives.

In the congressional elections of the same year he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the first district of Connecticut , where he succeeded Republican John R. Buck on March 4, 1887 . But since he already lost the following election in 1888 against William E. Simonds , Vance could only spend one term in Congress until March 3, 1889 .

After his time in the US House of Representatives, Vance returned to his private business interests. From 1893 to 1895 he was Minister of Labor ( Labor commissioner ) of the State of Connecticut. He then served as Mayor of New Britain between 1896 and 1897. In the year of his death, 1902, he was a member of an assembly to revise the state constitution. Robert Vance died in North Carolina on June 15, 1902 and was buried in New Britain.
