Lewis B. Sturges

Lewis Burr Sturges (born March 15, 1763 in Fairfield , Colony of Connecticut , †  March 30, 1844 in Norwalk , Ohio ) was an American politician . Between 1805 and 1817 he represented the state of Connecticut in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Lewis Sturges was a son of Jonathan Sturges (1740-1819), who had represented the State of Connecticut in the Continental Congress and later in the US House of Representatives. The younger Sturges attended Yale College until 1782 and then worked in New Haven in commerce. In 1786 he returned to Fairfield. Between 1787 and 1791 he was employed by the estate court there. Politically, he became a member of the Federalist Party in the late 1790s . Between 1794 and 1803 he was a member of the Connecticut House of Representatives .

After the resignation of Congressman Roger Griswold , Sturges was elected in a state-wide by-election as his successor to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC . After he was confirmed in this mandate in the following five regular elections, Sturges could remain in Congress between September 16, 1805 and March 3, 1817 . During this time the British-American War of 1812 fell .

After serving in the US House of Representatives, he moved to Norwalk, Ohio, where he died in 1844.
