Marilyn Schmiege (born November 29, 1948 in Milwaukee ) is an American-German singer with a mezzo-soprano voice , university teacher and vocal teacher .

Marilyn Schmiege, b. Konrad, studied singing, church music (organ) at Boston University, Valparaiso University and at the Westphalian University of Music with Anny Dieninghoff . From 1977 to 1978 she was a member of the International Opera Studio in Zurich. Her steep career began in 1978 as Dorabella in Così fan tutte at the Wuppertal Opera House . The artist accompanied this role throughout her entire life as a singer. From 1978 to 1982 Marilyn Schmiege was a member of the ensemble at the Staatstheater am Gärtnerplatz . This was followed by guest engagements at the major international opera stages. The mezzo-soprano sang z. B. in Bayreuth, Dresden, Munich, Hamburg, Frankfurt, Cologne, Vienna, Amsterdam, Antwerp, Paris, Barcelona, ​​at the Metropolitan Opera in New York as well as in a production of the Milan Scala in Castello Sforzesco .

In addition to her stage presence, the singer was / is active as a song and concert singer. In this regard, she has performed with the Munich Philharmonic , the Bamberg Symphony , the Berlin Symphony Orchestra and the New York Philharmonic Orchestra under well-known conductors such as Gabriele Ferro , Daniele Gatti , Horst Stein , Lothar Zagrosek , Rafael Kubelík etc. Together with the pianist Donald Sulzen , she gave a considerable number of recitals in European cities. Her song and concert repertoire is extremely extensive. This includes works u. a. by Hindemith, Mahler, Berg, Beethoven, Ravel, Telemann, by Zemlinsky, Schoenberg, Wolf, Liszt and Schumann.

Schmiege has been a member of the jury at international singing competitions in Germany, Italy and China several times. She has been teaching singing since 2001, first at the Richard Strauss Conservatory and since autumn 2008 at the Munich University of Music and Performing Arts , where she was made an honorary professor in 2010. Her students are now well-known singers themselves, for example Susanne Drexl , Franziska Rabl and Mathias Ludwig .

Since May 2014 she has been President of the Federal Association of German Singing Pedagogues , the largest singing pedagogue association in Europe.

Schmiege offers private courses (and is practically active himself) in singing, qigong , kinesiology and energetic healing .
