Simeon Baldwin

Simeon Baldwin (born December 14, 1761 in Norwich , Colony of Connecticut , †  May 26, 1851 in New Haven , Connecticut ) was an American politician . Between 1803 and 1805 he represented the state of Connecticut in the US House of Representatives .

Life

Simeon Baldwin attended Yale College after elementary school until 1781 . In 1782 he worked as a teacher at the Albany Academy and from 1783 to 1786 he taught at Yale. After studying law and being admitted to the bar in 1786, he began his new profession in New Haven. In this city he was also a City Clerk between 1789 and 1800 . Between 1790 and 1803 he was an administrative clerk in the Connecticut Federal District Court.

Politically, Baldwin became a member of the Federalist Party . He was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the 1802 congressional election, held in Connecticut state-wide . There he completed a legislative period between March 4, 1803 and March 3, 1805. In 1804 he decided not to run again.

After serving in Congress , he returned to his post in the federal district court. However, after he was dismissed from this office by Judge John Edwards in 1806, Baldwin was first associate judge in the Connecticut Superior Court and later in the Connecticut Supreme Court of Errors , which he remained until 1817. Between 1822 and 1830 he sat on a committee that dealt with the planning of the Farmington Canal . In 1826 he was also Mayor of New Haven; he was succeeded in this office by William Bristol . After 1830 Simeon Baldwin withdrew into his retirement. He died in May 1851 at the age of 89 in New Haven.

Simeon Baldwin was married to a daughter of Roger Sherman (1721-1793), who was a member of Congress from 1789 to 1791 and a US Senator from 1791 until his death . His son Roger (1793–1863) was Connecticut Governor from 1844 to 1846 and US Senator from 1847 to 1851. His grandson Simeon (1840–1927) also served as governor of Connecticut between 1911 and 1915.
