Joshua Coit

Joshua Coit (born October 7, 1758 in New London , Colony of Connecticut , †  September 5, 1798 ibid) was an American politician . Between 1793 and 1798 he represented the state of Connecticut in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Joshua Coit grew up during the British colonial era. He attended the public schools of his home country and then until 1776 Harvard College , from which Harvard University later emerged. After studying law and being admitted to the bar in 1779, he began practicing this profession in New London. Between 1784 and 1793 he sat several times as a member of the Connecticut House of Representatives ; In 1793 he was its speaker as the successor to Andrew Adams .

Politically, he was one of the supporters of the first federal government under President George Washington ( pro-administration ); later he joined the Federalist Party . In the 1792 Congressional elections , held in Connecticut state-wide, he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Philadelphia for the third seat of his state . There he took over from Jonathan Sturges on March 4, 1793 . After two re-elections, he was able to exercise his mandate in Congress until his death on September 5, 1798. After his death, his mandate went to Jonathan Brace .
