John Russ

John Russ (born October 29, 1767 in Ipswich , Essex County , Province of Massachusetts Bay , †  June 22, 1833 in Hartford , Connecticut ) was an American politician . Between 1819 and 1823 he represented the state of Connecticut in the US House of Representatives .

Career

John Russ attended elementary school in his home country. He then moved to Hartford, Connecticut, where he worked in commerce. He also began a political career as a member of the Democratic Republican Party . In the congressional elections of 1818, which in Connecticut were not held by constituency, but state-wide, he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC . There he took over the seat of Samuel B. Sherwood . After a re-election in 1820, he was able to complete two legislative terms in Congress between March 4, 1819 and March 3, 1823 .

In 1822 Russ declined to run again. Instead, he ran unsuccessfully for a seat in the Connecticut House of Representatives in 1823 . A year later, however, he made the leap into this parliamentary chamber. Also in 1824, Russ became a judge in the Hartford Probate Court. He held this office until 1830. Then he resumed his old trade activities. John Russ died in Hartford in June 1833 at the age of 65.
