Nathan Belcher

Nathan Belcher (born June 23, 1813 in Preston , New London County , Connecticut , †  June 2, 1891 in New London , Connecticut) was an American politician . Between 1853 and 1855 he represented the third constituency of the state of Connecticut in the US House of Representatives .

Career

After a good elementary school education, Nathan Belcher attended Amherst College in Massachusetts until 1822 . This was followed by a law degree at Cambridge Law School . After his admission to the bar, he began working in his new profession in Clinton . In 1841 Belcher moved to New London, where he made hardware, tools and kitchen utensils.

Belcher was a member of the Democratic Party . He was a member of the Connecticut House of Representatives in 1846 and 1847 ; In 1850 he was a member of the State Senate . In the congressional election of 1852 he was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the third district of Connecticut . There he took over from Chauncey F. Cleveland on March 4, 1853 . Since he renounced another candidacy in 1854, he could only spend one legislative period in Congress until March 3, 1855 .

After serving in the House of Representatives, Nathan Belcher resumed his previous activities in New London. He also got into the banking industry. Politically he did not appear again until his death on June 2, 1891.
