Nehemiah D. Sperry
Nehemiah Day Sperry (born July 10, 1827 in Woodbridge , Connecticut , † November 13, 1911 in New Haven , Connecticut) was an American politician . Between 1895 and 1911 he represented the second constituency of the state of Connecticut in the US House of Representatives .
Career
Nenehmiah Sperry attended both public and private schools in his home country. Then he worked in agriculture and as a miller. For a few years he also worked as a teacher. Then he worked for a construction company. In 1853 he began his political career on Woodbridge City Council.
Sperry became a member of the Republican Party, founded in 1854 . He served as Secretary of State in the Connecticut government in 1855 and 1856 . In 1856, 1864 and 1888 he took part as a delegate at the respective Republican National Conventions , at which John C. Frémont , Abraham Lincoln and Benjamin Harrison were nominated as the party's presidential candidates. Sperry served intermittently on his party's executive board at both state and federal levels. In Connecticut he was the party chairman.
During the Civil War , Sperry was chairman of the New Haven recruiting office. In July 1861, President Lincoln made him postman in that town. He held this office until 1886. In that year he was deposed by Democratic President Grover Cleveland . Between 1890 and 1894 he was again a post holder in New Haven.
In 1894, Sperry was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the Second District of Connecticut . There he took over from the Democrat James P. Pigott on March 4, 1895 . After seven re-elections, he was able to complete eight legislative terms in Congress by March 3, 1911 . From 1899 he was chairman of the committee that dealt with the alcohol trade. In 1910 Sperry declined to run again. After his last term in office he left Washington. He died that same year, on November 13, 1911, in New Haven and was buried there.
