Ebenezer Young

Ebenezer Young (born December 25, 1783 in Killingly , Connecticut , † August 18, 1851 in West Killingly , Connecticut) was an American politician . Between 1829 and 1835 he represented the state of Connecticut in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Ebenezer Young attended Yale College until 1806 . After studying law and admission to the bar, he began working in his new profession in Westfield, now Danielson . He was also involved in the manufacture of clothing items at West Killingly.

Politically, Young became a member of the Federalist Party . He was elected to the Connecticut House of Representatives in 1810, 1811, 1816, and 1817 . He returned to this chamber again between 1826 and 1828. From 1827 he was president of the house. In between he sat in the State Senate from 1823 to 1825 . After his party broke up, Young became a member of the National Republican Party , which supported President John Quincy Adams and was in opposition to Andrew Jackson and his Democratic Party . The National Republican Party later became largely part of the Whig Party .

In the Congressional elections of 1828, which were held in Connecticut state-wide and not by constituency, Young was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC . There he took over the mandate previously exercised by Orange Merwin on March 4, 1829 . After two re-elections, he was able to complete three legislative terms in Congress by March 3, 1835 . These were overshadowed by heated discussions about President Jackson's policies. Among other things, it was about the nullification crisis with the state of South Carolina and the banking policy of the president. Between 1831 and 1833, Young served as the chairman of the State Property Spending Control Committee.

After his time in the US House of Representatives, Ebenezer Young withdrew from politics. He died on August 18, 1851 in West Killingly.
