Lawrence Joseph "Larry" DeNardis (born March 18, 1938 in New Haven , Connecticut ; † August 24, 2018 ibid) was an American politician . Between 1981 and 1983 he represented the third constituency of the state of Connecticut in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Lawrence DeNardis attended until 1956, the Hamden High School in Connecticut and then to 1960 the College of the Holy Cross in Worcester ( Massachusetts ). He then studied at New York University until 1964 . Between 1960 and 1963 he was a reserve lieutenant in the US Navy . Between 1964 and 1979 he was a lecturer at Albertus Magnus College in New Haven. DeNardis was president of the Association of Independent Colleges of Connecticut in 1979 and 1980.

Politically, DeNardis joined the Republican Party . Between 1970 and 1979 he was a member of the Connecticut Senate ; between 1966 and 1982 he was a delegate to the regional party conventions of the Republicans. In 1982 he served as the Connecticut convention chair. In 1976 he was a delegate to the Republican National Convention in Kansas City , where Gerald Ford was nominated as the party's presidential candidate. In the 1980 congressional elections, DeNardis was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the third district of Connecticut , where he succeeded Democrat Robert Giaimo on January 3, 1981 . But since he was defeated by the Democrat Bruce Morrison in the following elections in 1982 , he was only able to complete one term in Congress until January 3, 1983 . In 1984 he ran unsuccessfully to return to Congress.

From 1983 to 1984 he was a visiting professor at the University of Connecticut where he taught constitutional law. Between 1985 and 1987 he was head of department in the Federal Ministry of Health ; In 1987 he was also visiting professor at the Woodrow Wilson International Center in the federal capital Washington. In 1991, DeNardis served as chair of the Connecticut Higher Education Council. Between 1991 and 2004 he was a faculty member and president of the University of New Haven .

Since 2000 he has been chairman of the Tweed New Haven Regional Airport Authority . In the run-up to the 2010 Connecticut gubernatorial election , he was a Republican candidate; In the end, however, he decided not to submit an official application. The nomination went to Thomas C. Foley .
