Robert Hampton Steele (born November 3, 1938 in Hartford , Connecticut ) is a former American politician . Between 1970 and 1975 he represented the second electoral district of the state of Connecticut in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Robert Steele attended public schools in Wethersfield and then through 1960 Amherst College in Massachusetts . He then studied until 1963 at Columbia University in New York City . Between 1968 and 1970, Steele worked as a security officer for the Travelers Insurance Company .

Politically, Steele joined the Republican Party . After the death of Democratic Congressman William St. Onge in May 1970, the due by-election in Connecticut's second district was linked to the regular congressional election. Steele was elected as St. Onges successor in the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC . This enabled him to end the legislative term that had begun between November 3, 1970 and January 3, 1971, and immediately begin another term of office. After re-election in 1972, Steele remained in Congress until March 3, 1975 . The Watergate affair , among other things, took place during this period .

In 1974 he renounced another candidacy. Instead, he ran unsuccessfully for the governor of Connecticut that year , defeating Democratic candidate Ella T. Grasso . After that he did not hold any other important political offices. Robert Steele now lives in Essex .
