Chauncey Goodrich
Chauncey Goodrich (born October 20, 1759 in Durham , Middlesex County , Colony of Connecticut , † August 18, 1815 in Hartford , Connecticut ) was an American politician who represented the state of Connecticut in both chambers of Congress .
Goodrich studied law at Yale University , where he graduated in 1776. He then worked as a teacher at a school before teaching at Yale from 1779 to 1781. Upon graduation, he was inducted into the Connecticut Bar in 1791 and began practicing law in Hartford.
Goodrich, who was a member of the Federalists , began his political career in the Connecticut House of Representatives , of which he was a member from 1793 to 1794. He left there after the sixth state district into the US House of Representatives was elected. He was a member of this chamber from March 4, 1795 to March 3, 1801, at the side of his brother Elizur for the last two years .
After the end of his tenure in Philadelphia Chauncey Goodrich returned to Connecticut, where he worked again as a lawyer and from 1802 to 1807 was a member of the Governor's Council , a kind of advisory chamber. In 1807 the state parliament appointed him to succeed the late US Senator Uriah Tracy . After being re-elected, he remained a member of the Senate until May 1813 before stepping down to become lieutenant governor of Connecticut. He had already been elected Mayor of Hartford the previous year . He held both offices until his death in 1815.
