William S. Holabird

William S. Holabird (born around 1794 in Winsted , Litchfield County , Connecticut , †  May 20, 1855 in Winchester , Connecticut) was an American lawyer and politician . Between 1842 and 1844 he was lieutenant governor of the state of Connecticut.

Career

Nothing is known about William Holabird's youth and schooling. But he must have studied law because he later worked in law. Politically, he joined the Democratic Party founded by President Andrew Jackson . In the early 1830s, he ran twice for Congress without success . Between 1834 and 1841 he was a federal attorney for the district of Connecticut. In that capacity he was one of the prosecutors in the Amistad trial . In the 1997 film Amistad based on it , Holabird is played by actor Pete Postlethwaite .

In 1842, Holabird was elected lieutenant governor of Connecticut alongside Chauncey F. Cleveland . He held this office between 1842 and 1844. He was Deputy Governor and Chairman of the State Senate . After the end of his time as Lieutenant Governor, he no longer appeared politically. He died in Winchester on May 20, 1855.
