Benjamin Douglas

Benjamin Douglas (born April 3, 1816 in Northford , New Haven County , Connecticut , † June 26, 1891 ) was an American politician . In the years 1861 and 1962 he was Deputy Governor of the State of Connecticut.

Career

Nothing is known about Benjamin Douglas's youth and schooling. He later worked with his brother William in the manufacture of pumps. He lived in Middletown , where he was mayor between 1850 and 1853. Politically, he joined the Republican Party founded in 1854 . In June 1856 he took part as a delegate to the Republican National Convention in Philadelphia , on which John C. Frémont was nominated as the first presidential candidate of this party.

In 1860, Douglas was elected lieutenant governor of Connecticut alongside William Alfred Buckingham . He held this office between 1861 and 1862 at the beginning of the civil war . He was Deputy Governor and Chairman of the State Senate . Nothing is known about his life after his time as Lieutenant Governor. He died on June 26, 1894 and was buried in Middletown.
