New Haven County is a county in the state of Connecticut in the United States . The largest city in the county and the traditional county seat is New Haven , but in Connecticut all local administrative functions have been transferred to the parishes. The famous Yale University is also located in New Haven .

The county has an area of 2233 square kilometers, of which 664 square kilometers are water. It is bordered by counties in a clockwise direction: Hartford County , Middlesex County , Fairfield County, and Litchfield County .

The county had 824,008 people as of the 2000 census . There were 319,040 households and 210,566 families. The population density was 525 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 79.40 percent white, 11.32 percent African American, 0.25 percent Native American, 2.33 percent Asian, 0.04 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 4.51 percent from other ethnic groups Groups. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 10.09 percent of the total population.
Of the 319,040 households, 31.2 percent had children and young people under the age of 18 living with them. 48.6 percent were married couples living together, 13.6 percent were single mothers. 34.0 percent were not families. 28.2 percent were single households and 11.0 percent had people aged 65 years or over. The average household size was 2.50 and the average family size was 3.08.
For the entire county, the population was composed of 24.5 percent of residents under 18 years of age, 8.7 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 30.0 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, 22.4 percent between 45 and 64 years of age 14.5 percent were 65 years of age or over. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females there were 92.5 males, and for every 100 females aged 18 and over there were 88.7 males.
The median income for a household in the county is $ 48,834 , and the median income for a family is $ 60,549. Males had a median income of $ 43,643 versus $ 32,001 for females. The per capita income was $ 24,439. 9.5 percent of the population and 7.0 percent of families are below the poverty line. These included 13.0 percent of the population under the age of 18 and 7.7 percent of the population aged 65 and over.
