history
In 1661, Jonathan Gilbert received permission and land to build a farm near Cold Spring that would later become the town of Meriden. In the 17th and 18th centuries, the small community remained a loose collection of huts that were only used by travelers from time to time. Mainly the Belcher Tavern (Belcher tavern or inn) , built by Solomon Goffe in 1771 and still existing as a museum today .
In 1724 around 35 families had campaigned for the need for a building of their own for joint meetings and worship, as the distance from the scattered farms was too far. This square is now on the corner of Ann Street and Dryden Drive . In 1806 the parish of Meriden was recognized. In 1839 the railroad came and the community was relocated to Pilgrim Harbor , now the city center. The airport was built around 1920. The first town house was built in 1860 and burned down in 1904. Abraham Lincoln made one of his speeches on the steps of the townhouse.
