Robert Andrew "Rob" Hyman (born April 24, 1950 in Meriden , Connecticut ) is an American musician , songwriter , arranger , producer and founding member of the rock band The Hooters .

Career

Hyman started playing the piano at the age of four and plays numerous instruments including the piano , keyboard , accordion , melodica , guitar and mandolin . After playing in local bands in his hometown, he met at the University of Pennsylvania on Eric Bazilian . With him, he first formed two less successful bands called Wax and Baby Grand - the latter released two albums on Arista Records - before the two formed The Hooters in 1980 .

In addition to the Hooters , he also works for numerous other artists. He owns his own recording studio, Elm Street Studios , in Philadelphia , Pennsylvania.

In 2000 he was honored with a plaque on the Philadelphia Walk of Fame by the Philadelphia Music Alliance.

Success with the Hooters

Rob Hyman is the musical director of the Hooters alongside Eric Bazilian. Together with him he is the main songwriter of the band and responsible for the typical sound.

The band became known to a worldwide audience when they opened the Live Aid concert in Philadelphia in 1985 . Her music was particularly well received in Germany and Scandinavia. After 1995 the band took a break and played together again for the first time in 2001.

In 2019 Hyman and Bazilian appeared as Eric Bazilian & Rob Hyman of The Hooters as guest stars in the Night of the Proms concert series .

Work with other artists

Even before the Hooters became known beyond the Philadelphian music scene, Rob Hyman and Eric Bazilian were asked to help a hitherto unknown artist named Cyndi Lauper with the recording of the first studio album . Both worked as musicians and arrangers on She's So Unusual . Rob Hyman wrote the world hit Time After Time with her and also sang the chorus. This earned him a 1985 Grammy nomination for Song of the Year . He was also involved as a songwriter and studio musician on Lauper's 1993 album Hat Full of Stars .

In 1995 he worked as a songwriter and studio musician on Joan Osborne 's Relish album , which was nominated for several Grammys.

In 1998, Rob Hyman and Rick Chertoff gathered a number of artists - including Cyndi Lauper, Joan Osborne, Carole King, and members of the Hooters - to produce the concept album Largo , which was inspired by Antonín Dvořák's Symphony From the New World .

For the score for the film The Grinch , he was involved as a songwriter and producer on the song Christmas of Love .

Other artists for whom Hyman has worked as a songwriter, producer, arranger or instrumentalist include Ricky Martin , whose hit Private Emotion is a cover version of a Hooters song, Dar Williams , Patty Smyth , Jon Bon Jovi , The Chieftains and Carole King.
