North Haven is mentioned early in a will from 1714 with the Reverend James Pierpont (1659-1714) leaving an area of over 3 hectares to a community of neighbors, provided that they would set up and use a community hall and a cemetery there (“provided those neighbors will set their meeting house there and make their training and burying there ”). According to Ezra Stiles' records , there were around forty families in North Haven in the early 18th century who were self-sufficient on the farm.

In 1870, John M. Marlin founded the company Marlin Firearms in North Haven to manufacture high quality lever action rifles in competition with the Winchester Repeating Arms Company, which was already established at the time .

At the end of World War II there was a significant increase in population. North Haven's population grew rapidly, quadrupling between 1945 and 1970. In particular, the Pratt & Whitney and Marlin Firearms factories made subsequent population increases.
