Marlin-Firearms was founded in North Haven in 1870. The founder was John Mahlon Marlin, born on May 6, 1836 in Boston Neck (died July 1, 1901). Marlin learned the trade of a toolmaker from May 6, 1854 from the company "American Machine Works" . During the Civil War, he worked in the production of Colt in Hartford . From 1863, John Marlin was known as a pistol manufacturer in North Haven. The first weapons he made were single-shot small pistols for women's handbags. His first patents concern lever action rifles. They are from February 8th and April 5th 1870, from the period he spent at Hartfort between 1867 and 1869. From 1871 he was officially registered as a weapons manufacturer in North Haven. In the period from 1870 to 1887, in addition to small pistols, he manufactured six different models of revolvers and designed new models of long guns . He registered a total of 25 patents on weapons. In 1879 the first prototype for long guns was completed, and from 1881 an improved version began series production. Plans from 1899 show the construction of an extensive arms factory in North Haven. After the founder's death in 1901, sons Mahon Henry Marlin (born 1864, died 1949) and John Howard Marlin (born 1876, died 1959) took over management of the company. Mahon H. Marlin was the manufacturing manager and developer, while John H. Marlin was responsible for sales and administration.

Towards the end of the First World War, Marlin manufactured a large number of Marlin Rockwell M1918 machine guns for arming aircraft and armored vehicles. During World War II, Marlin produced 15,000 of the United Defense M42 submachine guns as an alternative to the Thompson submachine gun . They were made available by the Office of Strategic Services Resistance Forces in Europe and Asia, as well as special Allied Command Forces.

Marlin is known for high quality lever action rifles and has always competed with the Winchester Repeating Arms Company , which offers similar products. A special feature of Marlin weapons are known as "micro-groove rifling" features developed in the late 1950s and have been patented.

Marlin Firearms became a subsidiary of Remington Arms in 2007 . In April 2008 it was announced that manufacturing in Gardner, Worcester County, Massachusetts , would end at the end of 2008. About 200 employees were laid off. 2010 also saw the end of manufacturing in North Haven. 265 jobs were cut. In April 2011, there were only 6 employees left at Marlin in North Haven. The manufacture of the Marlin brand weapons was continued by Remington at other locations. According to address information in catalogs, the company headquarters was relocated to Madison, in Madison County (North Carolina) .
