Middlesex County is a county in the state of Connecticut in the United States . The largest city in the county and the traditional county seat is Middletown , but in Connecticut all local administrative functions have been transferred to the parishes.

The county has an area of 1137 square kilometers, of which 181 square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Hartford County , New London County, and New Haven County .

As of the 2000 census , the county had 155,071 people. There were 61,341 households and 40,607 families. The population density was 162 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 91.28 percent white, 4.42 percent African American, 0.17 percent Native American, 1.56 percent Asian, 0.04 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.97 percent from other ethnic groups Groups. 3.00 percent of the total population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 61,341 households, 30.3 percent had children and young people under the age of 18 living with them. 54.4 percent were married couples living together, 8.8 percent were single mothers. 33.8 percent were not families. 27.2 percent were single households and 10.0 percent had people aged 65 or over. The average household size was 2.43 and the average family size was 2.98 people.
For the entire county, the population was composed of 23.2 percent of residents under 18 years of age, 7.3 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 31.1 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, 24.8 percent between 45 and 64 years of age 13.6 percent were 65 years of age or over. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females there were 95.1 males, and for every 100 females aged 18 and over there were 92.1 males.
The median income for a household in the county is $ 59,175 , and the median income for a family is $ 71,319. Males had a median income of $ 48,341 versus $ 35,607 for females. The per capita income was $ 28,251. 4.6 percent of the population and 2.3 percent of families lived below the poverty line. This included 4.0 percent of the population under the age of 18 and 5.9 percent of the population aged 65 and over.
