Millers Pond State Park is a state park in the US state of Connecticut in the area of the parishes of Durham and Haddam on Foothills Road .

geography

The park surrounds the 12 hectare reservoir from the 18th century and now covers 113 hectares (280 acres). Recreational activities include fishing, hiking, mountain biking, and hunting. The pond dams the Sumner Brook , which flows north from there and flows into the Connecticut River in the urban area of Middletown . Just a few hundred meters to the northeast is Stepanski Pond, which drains through the Bible Rock Brook . The two lakes are only separated by an isthmus. The water of the lake comes from rich, very clean springs that guarantee a healthy population of trout and black bass . In the west and south of the park, areas of the Cockaponset State Forests adjoin . The gneiss rocks in the park belong to the Collins Hill formation and the Middletown formation .

history

Thomas Miller built the dam as early as 1704 to create a reservoir for his flour mill, which was a little further down the stream. In 1955, the State Park and Forest Commission acquired Millers Pond from the heirs of Thomas Macdonough Russell with funds donated to the George Dudley Seymour Trust . The original area consisted of the 12 hectares (30 acres) of lake area and 69 hectares (170 acres) of woodland. Over the years, more areas were acquired and it was not until 1972 that the area around the lake was completely part of the state park.
