Litchfield County is a county in the US state of Connecticut . The county's largest city is Torrington . The traditional administrative center is Litchfield , but in Connecticut all local administrative functions have been transferred to the communities.

The county covers an area of 2,446 square kilometers, of which 64 square kilometers are water. It is bordered in a clockwise direction by the following counties: Berkshire and Hampden Counties, Massachusetts, Hartford Counties , New Haven Counties , Fairfield Counties , and Dutchess Counties, New York.

According to the 2000 census , the county had a population of 182,193. There were 71,551 households and 49,584 families. The population density was 76 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 95.77 percent white, 1.10 percent African American, 0.18 percent Native American, 1.17 percent Asian, 0.02 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.68 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; Hispanic or Latino of any race was 2.14 percent of the total population.
Of the 71,551 households, 32.1 percent had children and young people under the age of 18 living with them. 57.2 percent were married couples living together, 8.6 percent were single mothers. 30.7 percent were not families. 25.3 percent were single households and 10.2 percent had people aged 65 or over. The average household size was 2.51 and the average family size was 3.03.
For the entire county, the population was composed of 24.6 percent of residents under 18 years of age, 5.7 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 29.8 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, 25.7 percent between 45 and 64 years of age 14.2 percent were 65 years of age or over. The average age was 40 years. For every 100 females there were 95.6 males, and for every 100 females aged 18 and over there were 92.5 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $ 56,273 , and the median income for a family was $ 66,445. Males had a median income of $ 45,586 versus $ 31,870 for females. The per capita income was $ 28,408. 4.5 percent of the population and 2.7 percent of families lived below the poverty line. This included 4.3 percent of the population under the age of 18 and 5.4 percent of the population aged 65 and over.
