East Hampton is a city in Middlesex County in the US state of Connecticut , United States . The East Hampton area also includes the villages of Cobalt, Haddam Neck, and Middle Haddam.

history

In 1710 the first English settlers from the Eastham area settled in what is now Middle Haddam, namely Gideon Goffe . Other families followed him and built a settlement on Lake Pocotopaug between Middletown and Haddam , which they called Easthampton from 1746. When the village became independent from Middletown in 1767, it incorporated itself under the name Chatham in honor of William Pitt , who was an advocate of the English colonies in England. The old name continued to be used unofficially until 1915 when the official name Chatham was abandoned in favor of East Hampton. However, the city is south- west of Hampton, which is an order of magnitude smaller .

Thanks to the name Chatham, the location (a shipyard and a forge had settled there early) in the 18th and 19th centuries benefited from the good reputation of the English shipyards of Chatham in the motherland. In addition to shipbuilding, the city's industry also included mines and bell foundries.
