William Alfred Buckingham

William Alfred Buckingham (* 28. May 1804 in Lebanon , New London County , Connecticut , †  5. February 1875 in Norwich , Connecticut) was an American politician of the Republican Party .

After attending public school and a private school in Colchester , Buckingham worked as a businessman and in the manufacturing industry. From 1849 to 1850 and again from 1856 to 1857 he was mayor of the city of Norwich. In 1858 Buckingham was elected Governor of Connecticut with 52 percent of the vote against Democrat James T. Pratt , which he remained after seven re-elections until 1866. He won again against Pratt and twice against Thomas H. Seymour and Origen S. Seymour, among others .

In 1868 William Buckingham was elected to the US Senate as a representative of Connecticut , from March 4, 1869 until his death in February 1875. In the Senate he was chairman of the Committee on Engrossed Bills ; he was also a member of the Committee on Investigation and Retrenchment and the Committee on Indian Affairs .
