William W. Ellsworth

William Wolcott Ellsworth (born November 10, 1791 in Windsor , Hartford County , Connecticut , †  January 15, 1868 in Hartford , Connecticut) was an American politician and governor of the state of Connecticut.

Early years and political advancement

William Ellsworth was the son of Oliver Ellsworth , a United States Senator and Supreme Court Justice . He graduated from Yale University in 1810 , studied law at Litchfield, and was admitted to the bar in 1813. From 1817 Ellsworth was at Trinity College in Hartford as a law professor ( Professor of Law ), a position he held until his death. Later he decided to go into politics. He ran for the US House of Representatives as a member of the National Republican Party and won. Ellsworth was elected to the 21st, 22nd and 23rd US Congress and served there from March 4, 1829 until his resignation on July 8, 1834. He was then elected to the Connecticut Senate in 1836 for the 1st District .

William Wolcott Ellsworth was married to Emily S. Webster, the eldest daughter of Rebecca Greenleaf, and Noah Webster , a farmer's son who began publishing dictionaries. The couple had six children together.

Connecticut Governor

Ellsworth won the Whigs gubernatorial nomination in 1838 and was elected Governor of Connecticut that same year. He was re-elected in 1839, 1840 and 1841. During his tenure, a progressive voter registration method was established , a school board established, and trivial laws passed aimed at improving Connecticut's volatile financial system. Ellsworth also won the gubernatorial election in 1842, but the legislature decided that the Democrat Chauncey F. Cleveland was the real winner.

Another résumé

Ellsworth returned to his legal practice. He later served as an associate judge on the Connecticut Supreme Court and the Supreme Court of Errors from 1847 . Due to the rule of law regarding age, he had to retire in 1861. He turned down two nominations for the US Senate and retired from public life.

William W. Ellsworth died on January 15, 1868 in Hartford and was buried there in the Old North Cemetery .
