Nathaniel Terry

Nathaniel Terry (born January 30, 1768 in Enfield , Hartford County , Colony of Connecticut , †  June 14, 1844 in New Haven , Connecticut ) was an American politician . Between 1817 and 1819 he represented the state of Connecticut in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Nathaniel Terry attended the public schools of his home country and then Dartmouth College and, until 1786, Yale College . After a subsequent law degree and his admission as a lawyer in 1790, he began to practice in Enfield in his new profession. In 1796 he moved to Hartford . Between 1802 and 1813 he was commanding the governor of Connecticut's footguards at Hartford. Terry also served as District Judge in Hartford County from 1807 and 1809.

Politically, Terry became a member of the Federalist Party . Between 1804 and 1815 he was a member of the Connecticut House of Representatives . In the 1816 state-wide congressional election, he was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington, DC for the sixth term from Connecticut . There he took over from John Davenport on March 4, 1817 . Until March 3, 1819 he could only complete one legislative period in Congress .

In 1818, Terry served on a commission to revise the Connecticut state constitution. From 1810 to 1835 he was President of Hartford Fire Insurance Co .; from 1819 to 1828 he was President of Hartford Bank . Terry was Mayor of Hartford between 1824 and 1831. He was also a general in the militia. He died in New Haven on June 14, 1844.
